In full disclosre, I know Garrett Batty. We were mission companions together in the New York New York South Mission. I have nothing but the highest regard for him and wish him all the success in the world.
This is the story of Joshua Dennis, a 10-year-old boy camping near an abandoned treasure mine in the Oqhir Mountains of Utah with his father, a group of young men, and their leaders. Nervous about entering the mine, he initially stayed back with his father. However, after gaining some courage, Joshua and his father decided to explore the mine. Shortly after, they reunited with the rest of the group.
As the others ventured down an unexplored branch of the mine, young Joshua decided he wanted to join them. Unfortunately, they disappeared before he could catch up. Unprepared and with a broken flashlight, Joshua became lost in the dark mine. Ultimately, it would take five days to find him.
Faith of Angels lays out a captivating series of events surrounding Joshua’s rescue. One of the lead characters is John Skinner, played by John Michael Finley of I Can Only Imagine. The movie begins with John on a fly-fishing trip when he feels an impression to return home, unaware of the unfolding events back in Utah.
I don’t want to reveal all the details of this movie, but I do want to highlight a few things I truly loved. I recently watched Escape from Germany and was disappointed that the spiritual elements foundational to the story were not depicted as well as they could have been. Things like praying, hearing voices, receiving inspiration, and seeing angels were either downplayed or absent. The best moment in that movie was when the missionary had a premonition not to get off the train. I understand these things are difficult to portray in movies with the seriousness and sincerity they deserve. It’s challenging to make them believable and not cheesy.
In Faith of Angels, I felt Garrett Batty masterfully told Joshua’s story. There were so many small but meaningful elements that I absolutely loved. When I watch a movie like this, I want the spiritual aspects to feel genuine and not glossed over. I could tell Garrett was very sensitive to these parts of the story—spiritual impressions, the visitation of angels, and answers to prayers were all thoughtfully depicted.
This movie was excellent all around. The cast, acting, directing, cinematography, script, and other elements were outstanding. I’m looking forward to adding it to my movie collection.
I would give it 5 stars or a 100% rating.
