I walked by a coworker’s desk at work today, and she had a book on her desk called The Secret Daily Teachings. I said, “Do you know what the secret is?” She replied, “Yes.” I asked, “What is it?” She said, “Gratitude.” Feeling confident in my intelligence, I responded, “It’s actually the Law of Attraction.” That led to a friendly debate I knew I was never going to win.
I left the conversation feeling a little bad. Gratitude is a great thing, but I came across as a bit of a punk by arguing that The Secret was really about the Law of Attraction. I had been turned off by The Secret some years ago when I strongly desired to achieve abundance in life, which led me to consume a lot of self-help books on similar topics. I left the conversation feeling as though I had sandbagged the idea of gratitude because I was so negative about The Secret.
So, I stopped by her desk after work and talked to her briefly. She felt there was a lot of negativity at work, so she arranged for everyone to read a brief uplifting thought daily and practice writing up to 100 things they were grateful for. This coworker is an old neighbor of mine, and I’ve known her for 20 years. She is a faithful member of the church. I was impressed with her determination and the spirit with which she was doing this. She told me she felt it was making a difference. To my surprise, even one of our most hardened employees was participating with her.
I’ve thought about it quite a bit. I am grateful for many things. I should not be embarrassed or feel as though I’m above expressing gratitude for those things. I should have been more open-minded and approached it with more positivity.
So, here is a list of things I express gratitude for. I am expressing this gratitude to God.
