NYNYS Mission September 2-11, 1996

Maybe I should note what is in this edition. Teaching a drunk, working it out with my comp, Mike Tyson Fight, TuPac’s Death, and an attack of the one eyed monster.

We found a family to teach, then committed a kid out of a part-member family. At about 3:30 they fed us (note: Spanish people feed you a lot) then had a DA (Dinner Appointment) at 5:30. Then another apt with our new member family at 7:30 and she fed us. I felt like throwing up after 2 meals but was past that at 3. […] The guy who came to church and said he wanted to get baptized but lives in the sister’s area got thrown in jail and they wanted the missionaries to go and bail him out. How funny. I keep having like these little spat things with my companion. […]

Well, it got kind of hard during the day then we came home and I prayed so it was good. After I prayed all the anger and pride left and I felt at peace. I actually got along with my comp.

P-Day again. So my comp tells me yesterday that I haven’t been called as a leader because of my Spanish. They don’t think it’s good enough. […]

Tyson whooped the biggest woosie. […] It lasted one minute ten seconds. […] $500 a ticket for a 1.1 minute fight. […]

This appears to have been a Mike Tyson fight. After looking it up, Mike Tyson fought Bruce Sheldon who took a dive in the middle of the first round. It was also the night TuPac (OnePac) was shot leading to his death a few days later. Apparently, the crowd chanted “fixed” because the fight seemed rigged in Mike Tyson’s favor.

There were a few musicians who died around my mission. Just prior to leaving Selena was shot and killed. While I was in the MTC Jerry Garcia (of the Grateful Dead) died. And now OnePac.

PS, all of our baptisms are falling out. […] I guess that’s what we get for waiting. You even keep up daily contact and call but somebody’s heart sure can grow cold fast.
– Federico is boning some chick
– Jiar was born a Catholic and will die a Catholic, his sister the same.

Well so many things fell through and by today my comp was tripping and I’m like “don’t worry.” We didn’t even take a gator to church but old Juan Jiado was there. The guy who showed up last week and then we turned over to the other elders, so we baptized him. He’s cool and is already sharing the gospel with people. He has already read a lot of the Book of Mormon. It was all cool and Rosalia is still coming. […] Oh ya, I had a comp inventory with my comp […]

What a boring day. Nothing went very good. But then finally at night we went to an appointment with a drunk we met the night before. And taught ½ the people in the office and they all want to come to church. […]

What a day, we had so many good things happen it was awesome. We found killer people. I’m so happy doing this work. My comp and I are working on doing what it takes to do our best. Trying to work juntos (together).

P-Day. [… I was told By a ZL I was a problem fixer …]

We were talking to some Dominican Chick tonight. She had a little sweater thing on and as she lifted her arm it caught on her watch and the 1 little button holding it together was not enough and it came ripping apart flying into the air. Luckily, I was writing something down. I saw a flash of her duck into the house to fix the problem. She thought 2 of 10 buttons would be safer this time. Too bad for my comp. He had to witness the horrifying experience. Attack of the one-eyed monster. I hope there will not be a sequel to this.

Things like that didn’t happen all the time, but some form of pornography seemed to be everywhere. I often felt like I was in that drawing where the angles were blocking the elders from all the bad stuff around them (drugs, women, danger)
