NYNYS Mission July 19-23, 1996

More tales from the mission.

At this time, I was in Sunnyside / Woodside Queens. I talk about the airplanes making their approach to LaGuardia over Queens. I mentioned the trains in Brooklyn. My first area in East New York, our chapel was an old gas station converted into the equivalent of a storefront church. The train would pass by and it would be so loud they would need to pause sacrament meeting. That on top of the adjustable microphone that made loud screeching noises each time it was adjusted or moved. And every person who talked needed to adjust the mic.

July 20,

We worked the top part of our area today and found very cool people. […] We went on splits with Elder. […] ZL Elder and I went over to Guadalupe’s, and she is as good as history. […] She knows it’s true she is scared to go to church for 3 weeks because she has to get her son baptized (4 years old) into the catholic church. So he needs to prepare for 3 weeks by going to a class for 3 hours a day to learn. He’s 4 are you kidding? […]

What a day we did so much all of our appointments juked. We had 8 or 9 but we found some pretty cool people today. […] I feel so much better now working over in our new part of town. I don’t have that sick feeling and people seem a little better. […] My poor companion, I’m working him into the ground. […]

Wow, my hump day is coming up fast. […] the members aren’t helping, fearless aren’t helping, street meetings aren’t helping, we have no area a book so that’s no help, oh well. We’ll knock a few doors. My comp was a little sick last night, so we took the evening off. I think I‘ve been working him into the ground but I’m not even working really hard just differently and all day he’s not used to it. He’s used to laying and laxing, so he told me. He said he needed to make up for how he had been in other areas. Boy the airplanes fly right over our house going into LaGuardia airport to land. And they are low and loud. I’m surprised I don’t wake up at night from them. It’s like being in the airport living there.

July 23, 1996 (Tues)

What a day. It was airplane day. Our house and area were the runway for planes to land. It was so loud all day long. Every 2 to 3 minutes. We had to wait feearlessing people because it was too noisy. Like the elevated trains in Brooklyn, but the trains are a lot louder and longer and drive you crazy. You can’t hear a word anyone speaks to you. So, we were in a discussion and planes after plane came over. […] They were about 300 feet above not too high. It was raining and the planes would go through the clouds. As each plane would go through the clouds it would shoot smoke clouds behind it in streams that looked really cool. I got off on it. A lot. I like this new part of the area we’re getting a lot of good stuff. We found a girl who may get baptized really soon. We got fed twice today. […]
