The Passion and Suffering of Christ

I was thinking about the sacrifice of Jesus Christ during this Easter season.  I realized it was Good Friday.  I typically like to watch the Passion of the Christ every year. I usually watch it by myself at night while the family is asleep.

While watching the movie this evening, I saw the scene where Christ is in the garden suffering.  As he suffered Satan sat by his side. It was all in Latin with no subtitles, so I had no idea what he was saying.  But it caused me to reflect on the fact that Satan wanted Jesus Christ to fail. And not only fail, but it pleased Satan to see Christ suffer.

I pondered the idea that Christ had to descend below all things. It makes sense that Jesus Christ would need to see and feel the complete depth of damnation in his suffering.   For him to descend below all things he would have had to have borne the weight of every sin, even those sins which are unimaginable unto most men.

We learn through the prophet Joseph Smith in D&C 122 that the son of man descended below all things.  It says:

7 And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.

8 The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?

Also in D&C 88 it says:

6 He that ascended up on high, as also he descended below all things, in that he comprehended all things, that he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth;

Jesus Christ stood at the very gates of hell during his suffering and then stepped into hell so he would be able to comprehend all things.

LDS doctrine tells us that all men will be resurrected and receive some form of glory. That of the Sun, Moon, or Stars. The Sun is the glory of the celestial, the moon the terrestrial, and the stars in all their variety the telestial. It also tells us that those who are of the moon and stars have no more progression. They are in a sense damned, prohibited from progressing further to become more like our father.

All of these glories are heaven and everyone who received a mortal body and lived on this earth will be a receiver of one of these heavenly glories. Even those people who performed the most unspeakable acts. Why? Because Jesus Christ paid for those sins. All of them.

The only sins he did not pay for were those who are sons of perdition.

The movie the Passion of the Christ, is not for everyone.  Christ truly suffered for our sins.  He paid a price no other man could pay.
